Australian passport photo dimensions

The accepted size range is 35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high, and the face must measure 32–36 mm from chin to crown. The photo must be less than 6 months old, in colour, with no shadows, reflections or head tilt.

Two prints on the right paper

Two good-quality photos are lodged with the application. They must be colour prints produced by dye sublimation, not inkjet, on heavy glossy paper of at least 200 gsm, which rules out most home printers; a photo kiosk or lab print of the 4 × 6 in sheet fits.

Glasses, coverings and expression

You must not wear glasses unless you cannot remove them for medical reasons; vision impairment alone is not an acceptable reason. Religious head coverings must be plain and show the entire face. Anyone over 3 needs a neutral expression with eyes open; children under 3 may have their mouth open.

What the Passport Office recommends

The Australian Passport Office recommends professional passport photo providers and explicitly does not recommend online services or mobile apps, citing identity-fraud risk. This tool only crops and sizes your own photo; no retouching is allowed, not even moles, wrinkles or scars.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Do not wear glasses unless you cannot remove them for medical reasons; vision impairment alone is not an acceptable reason.
  • A religious head covering must be plain, without even small patterns, and show the whole face from chin to forehead with both edges of the face visible.
  • Anyone over 3 faces the camera straight on with eyes open and a neutral expression; children under 3 may have their mouth open.
  • Remove AirPods and other wireless earbuds; hearing aids may stay. No retouching at all, not even moles, wrinkles or scars.
