Prints and recency

Hardcopy prints go on matte or semi-matte, non-reflective paper, and a new colour photo is required for every application. Recency is 3 months, shorter than the usual 6.

Glasses, headgear and expression

Frames must not cover any part of the eyes, with no flash or light reflected off the glasses; tinted glasses and sunglasses are not allowed. Only headgear habitually worn under religious or racial custom, and it should not be white because it would merge with the background. Neutral expression, mouth closed, head straight, no hair across the eyes.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Frames must not cover any part of the eyes, no flash or light reflected off the glasses; tinted glasses and sunglasses are not allowed.
  • Only headgear habitually worn in accordance with religious or racial custom, and it should not be white.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, head straight, eyes open, no hair across the eyes.
  • Both edges of the face and the top of the shoulders must show; no border.
