PNG to WebP converter

Drop PNG images below and download them as WebP, usually a fraction of the size with the transparency kept. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up or limit.

How to convert PNG to WebP

    1. Add your images. Drag PNG files onto the box above, or tap Choose files.
    2. Pick the quality. 85% is the usual setting for the web; raise it for graphics with fine text, lower it for photos where size matters most.
    3. Download. Save each WebP with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.

Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.

    What is a PNG file?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format: every pixel is stored exactly, which is why screenshots, logos, charts and anything with text or sharp lines are saved as PNG. It also supports transparency. iPhones and Macs save every screenshot as PNG, and so do Windows and Android.

The price is size. A PNG photo is often five to ten times larger than the same photo as JPEG, because photos have far more detail than lossless compression can squeeze.

    Why convert PNG to WebP?

For a website. WebP keeps the transparency of PNG while making the file several times smaller, which is why page-speed tools keep asking for it: every current browser displays WebP, and a page full of PNG screenshots or product cut-outs loads far faster as WebP. Keep the PNG as your master and serve the WebP.

For sharing, printing or an upload form, WebP is the wrong direction; those want JPG.

What the WebP keeps, and what it leaves out

    • Kept: the full picture at its original size, with transparency.
    • Left out: exactness. The WebP written here is lossy, so fine detail is simplified a little, invisibly at 85% for most images, and any text chunks or metadata in the PNG are dropped.
    • Browser: Chrome, Edge and Firefox write WebP; Safari may not, in which case the page says so.

Your browser writes the WebP itself, from files read on your disk, and saves it to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. Frequently asked questions

Is the PNG to WebP converter free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.

    Does the WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas of the PNG stay transparent in the WebP.

    Is the conversion lossless?

No, the WebP is written as a lossy image at the quality you choose, which is what makes it small. At 85% or more the difference is hard to see.

Why does the page say my browser cannot write WebP?

Safari can display WebP but does not always write it. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for this conversion.

How much smaller will the WebP be?

Usually three to ten times smaller than the PNG, depending on the image and the quality.
