JPG to WebP converter
Drop JPG photos below and download them as WebP, typically 25 to 35 percent smaller at the same quality. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up or limit.
How to convert JPEG to WebP
- Add your photos. Drag JPG files onto the box above, or tap Choose files.
- Pick the quality. 85% is the usual setting for the web; 75% for thumbnails, 90% or more for large hero images.
- Download. Save each WebP with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.
Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.
What is a JPG file?
JPEG (or JPG, the three-letter extension from the days of Windows) is the photo format that every camera, phone, website, printer and program has understood since the 1990s. It is lossy: it discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice to make files small, and the quality setting decides how much. It has no transparency.
Why convert JPG to WebP?
For a website. Google measured lossy WebP at 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, every current browser displays it, and page-speed tools reward it. If you publish photos on a site, serving WebP is the easiest size win there is. Keep the JPG as your master.
For anything else, sharing, printing, forms, a photo library, stay with JPG; the people and programs on the other end expect it.
What the WebP keeps, and what it leaves out
- Kept: the full picture at its original size.
- Left out: the camera details, date taken and location (EXIF), and a little more detail: JPG and WebP are both lossy, so the photo is compressed a second time.
- Browser: Chrome, Edge and Firefox write WebP; Safari may not, in which case the page says so.

| Where | How | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Any browser | This page: drop the photos, set the quality, download the WebPs | A handful of site images, on any device |
| Build tools | Image plugins for Astro, Next.js, Vite or Hugo convert at build time | Whole sites |

Your photos stay on your device
Your browser writes the WebP itself, from files read on your disk, and saves it to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. It is the same promise we make in our iPhone app, PrunePic: it reviews your photos on the iPhone itself and never uploads them.

Frequently asked questions
Is the JPG to WebP converter free?
Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.
How much smaller will the WebP be?
Typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than the JPG at the same visual quality, more at a lower quality setting.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
A little, since both formats are lossy. At 85% or more the difference is hard to see on a web page.
Why does the page say my browser cannot write WebP?
Safari displays WebP but does not always write it. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for this conversion.
Does the WebP keep the photo's date and location?
No. Only the picture is written, which is usually what you want on a website.
