Passport Online takes an uploaded photo or a booth code; paper applications take four identical prints. Poor-quality photos are the main reason applications are rejected.
Paper applications need four identical prints on photo-quality paper, reverse side white and unglazed; black and white is recommended, colour is accepted.
At least 715 × 951 px and not larger than 9 MB; in colour, not scanned, no compression artefacts or distortion, not digitally enhanced. Rotation does not matter. A photo-booth code can be used instead of uploading.
Place the crown and chin at the guide lines and the eyes in the band when one is shown. The oval is an approximate placement guide, not a face measurement or approval check.
This authority publishes no head height: keep the face centred with space above the head and the shoulders visible.
Irish passport photo dimensions
The printed size is a range: minimum 35 × 45 mm, maximum 38 × 50 mm. The photo shows you from head to mid torso with visible space between your head and shoulders and the edge; no head height in millimetres is published, and the photo must be taken in the last 6 months.
Passport Online upload rules
The digital photo is at least 715 × 951 px and no larger than 9 MB, in colour, not scanned, with no compression artefacts or distortion and not digitally enhanced. Rotation does not matter. A photo-booth code from Photo-Me or IDstation can be used instead of uploading.
Four prints for paper applications
Paper applications need four identical photos no more than 6 months old; the witness writes the form number on the back of two and signs and stamps them. Prints go on photo-quality paper at high resolution, reverse side white and unglazed; black and white is recommended because the passport prints in black and white, colour is accepted.
Why photos are rejected
Poor-quality photos are the main reason applications are rejected. Selfies are not accepted online, so someone else must take the photo without using the camera zoom. Glasses may stay if the frame covers no part of the eyes and there is no glare; no uniforms or insignia; neutral expression, mouth closed.
How to take a valid photo
The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.
- Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
- Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
- Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
- Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
- Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
- Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
- Someone else must take the photo; selfies are not accepted online. Do not use the camera zoom.
- Glasses are allowed if the frame covers no part of the eyes and there is no glare; dark glasses and sunglasses are not.
- Head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, with full facial features visible.
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, head not tilted; show head to mid torso with space between your head and shoulders and the edge; no uniforms or insignia.
