AVIF to JPG converter

Drop AVIF images below and download them as JPG, one by one or all at once in a zip. Your browser decodes AVIF itself, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up or limit.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

    1. Add your images. Drag AVIF files onto the box above, tap Choose files, or paste an image you copied from a web page.
    2. Pick the quality. 90% suits almost everything; go higher if you will edit the image, lower for smaller files.
    3. Download. Save each JPG with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.

Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.

    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec, published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It compresses photos noticeably smaller than JPEG and WebP at the same quality, and it supports transparency, HDR and animation. Chrome, Firefox and Safari (since Safari 16, in 2022) all display it, so it increasingly turns up when you save an image from a website.

Most things outside a browser still do not open it: older image viewers, many photo editors, office programs, upload forms and printing services expect JPG or PNG.

    Why convert AVIF to JPG?

To open the image anywhere else. A picture saved from a website as .avif will not open in many editors, office programs and older viewers, cannot be uploaded to most forms, and will not print at a counter. JPG will. For an image with a transparent background, use AVIF to PNG instead, which keeps it.

What the JPG keeps, and what it leaves out

    • Kept: the full picture at its original size.
    • Left out: transparency, which becomes white; animation, of which only the first frame is kept; and HDR, which is shown as it would be on a standard screen.
    • Quality: AVIF and JPG are both lossy, so the picture is compressed a second time. At 90% the difference is invisible for almost every image.

Any browserThis page: drop the files, download the JPGsOne image or a batch, on any device
MacOpen the image in Preview (macOS 13 Ventura or later), then File › Export and choose JPEGImages already on a recent Mac
WindowsInstall the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, then open the image in Photos and save a copy as JPEGA PC with the extension

Your images stay on your device

Current browsers decode AVIF natively, so there is nothing to download: the files are read from your disk, redrawn as JPG in memory and saved to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. It is the same promise we make in our iPhone app, PrunePic: it reviews your photos on the iPhone itself and never uploads them.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the AVIF to JPG converter free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.

Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

Very little at 90%. Both formats are lossy, so the picture is compressed again; raise the quality if you will edit the JPG.

    Which browsers can open AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later all decode AVIF, which is what this converter relies on. An older browser shows a message instead.

    What happens to transparency?

JPG has none, so transparent areas become white. Use AVIF to PNG to keep them.

Can I convert many AVIF files at once?

Yes. Drop as many as you like; Download all saves every JPG in one zip.
