Spanish passport photo dimensions

The official size is 32 × 26 millimetres, height by width: a 26 mm wide and 32 mm high print. One colour photo at high resolution on good-quality photo paper, front view, with the eyes open and the face oval showing eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin clearly.

No head height is published

The Policía Nacional publishes no head-height or eye-line figure; consulate sheets differ and are consulate-specific. The preview therefore shows no crown and chin lines; keep the face centred with space above the head.

Recency and the DNI

The passport page asks for a recent photo; the DNI pages state a maximum photo age of 2 years. No photo is needed for the passport if the DNI was obtained or renewed the same day.

Glasses and head coverings

No dark lenses: glasses must let the eyes be seen, and dark lenses are allowed only for blind people or serious defects. The head is totally uncovered; for the DNI, religious or medical head coverings are admitted if the face oval from the hairline to the chin is fully uncovered.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • No dark lenses; glasses must let the eyes be seen (dark lenses only for blind people or serious defects).
  • Head totally uncovered; for the DNI, religious or medical coverings are admitted if the face oval from hairline to chin is fully uncovered.
  • Front view, eyes open, with eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin clearly visible.
