Who needs a Malaysian photo

Adults need no print: the counter captures the face live. Children under 4 bring one photo of 35 × 50 mm with a shadowless white background. The eVisa and the Expatriate Services Division take an uploaded 35 × 50 mm photo instead.

The 35 × 50 mm frame

For visa and pass photos the head is 30–35 mm from chin to crown with a top margin of about 5 mm and a chin margin of 5–10 mm, full face, neutral expression, no head covering except religious. The children’s print asks for a face of at least 25–30 mm.

The 25 KB upload

The ESD upload is capped at 25 KB, which is small: the export searches the JPEG quality until the 413 × 591 px file fits. A plain white background with no border or frame helps. White replaced the older blue background; VDR passes still accept plain blue.

At the capture session

Contact lenses and spectacles are not permitted during the capture; no hats or headwear, and a hijab must leave the forehead uncovered. Eyes open, mouth closed, looking directly at the camera, hair off the face.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • No contact lenses or spectacles during the capture session.
  • No hats or headwear; a hijab is allowed as long as the forehead is not covered.
  • Eyes open, mouth closed, looking directly at the camera; hair must not cover the face.
  • White replaced the older blue background; VDR passes still accept plain blue.
