Paper applications accept a 33 × 48 mm print from a studio or professional photo paper; the online application takes a 3:4 head shot. Head width 15–22 mm is a rule almost no other country has.

Paper photos must be developed by a photo studio or printed on professional photo paper.

The GA/T 1180-2014 standard used for paper applications: 354–420 × 472–560 px JPEG of 40–120 KB. The fully online NIA application accepts 400–1000 px wide 3:4 head shots with the head about two thirds of the width, on a white or light blue background.

Chinese passport photo dimensions

The print measures 33 × 48 mm. The head is 28–33 mm from chin to crown and 15–22 mm wide across the face, a rule almost no other country has. The crown sits 3–5 mm below the top edge, with at least 7 mm between the chin and the bottom edge.

The digital file: 40 to 120 KB

Paper applications use the same GA/T 1180-2014 digital specification as the visa: 354–420 px wide and 472–560 px high, JPEG in 24-bit RGB, 40–120 KB. The export here is 420 × 560 px, and the quality search keeps the file inside that range.

The fully online NIA application

The National Immigration Administration’s online guide takes a 3:4 head shot 400–1000 px wide with the head about two thirds of the width, on a white or light blue background. Wear a dark collared top, shoot from under 1 m, and skip beauty filters: retouching is the main rejection reason.

Printing a Chinese passport photo

Paper photos must be developed by a photo studio or printed on professional photo paper. The 4 × 6 in sheet gives you a lab-ready layout; the photo must be in colour, with the ears and eyebrows fully visible.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Glasses are allowed with uncoloured lenses and no glare, shadow or frame blurring the eyes.
  • No hats or headscarves; religious ones must not cover the whole face.
  • Natural expression, both eyes open, no teeth showing; ears and eyebrows fully visible, hair over the ears is a rejection example.
  • Online selfie upload: dark collared top, no heavy make-up or coloured contacts, shoot from under 1 m away; beauty filters and retouching are the main rejection reasons.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Chinese passport photo?

33 × 48 mm, with the head 28–33 mm tall and 15–22 mm wide. The digital file is 354–420 × 472–560 px.

How big can the JPEG be?

40 to 120 KB for the GA/T 1180-2014 file. The tool searches the JPEG quality to land inside that range and refuses to save a file outside it.

Can I show my teeth?

No. The online guide asks for a natural expression with no teeth showing, both eyes open, and ears and eyebrows fully visible.

Can I wear glasses?

Yes, with uncoloured lenses and no glare, shadow or frame blurring the eyes. No hats or headscarves unless religious, and even then the face must not be covered.
