Passport photo size by country
Passport photo dimensions vary by country: 35 × 45 mm across most of Europe and Asia, 2 × 2 inches in the US, 50 × 70 mm in Canada, 33 × 48 mm in China. Compare 40 official profiles, align a private preview with the head guide, and export a print, a 4 × 6 in sheet or the upload file where the authority allows it.

Paper applications accept a 33 × 48 mm print from a studio or professional photo paper; the online application takes a 3:4 head shot. Head width 15–22 mm is a rule almost no other country has.
Paper photos must be developed by a photo studio or printed on professional photo paper.
The GA/T 1180-2014 standard used for paper applications: 354–420 × 472–560 px JPEG of 40–120 KB. The fully online NIA application accepts 400–1000 px wide 3:4 head shots with the head about two thirds of the width, on a white or light blue background.

Either a digital photo delivered through a studio retrieval code or a paper print is accepted. 36 × 47 mm is a Finnish size, not the ICAO 35 × 45 mm.
A paper print is accepted at the counter; the online application needs the digital photo through the retrieval code.
Exactly 500 × 653 px; a deviation of even one pixel is rejected. Crown to chin 445–500 px. Photo studios send the file to the police photo server and hand you a retrieval code for the online application; non-professional photos are often rejected.

One 35 × 45 mm colour print on good-quality photo paper with continuous-tone quality; computer prints, black-and-white photos, photos cut from group photos and signed photos are rejected.

Passport Online takes an uploaded photo or a booth code; paper applications take four identical prints. Poor-quality photos are the main reason applications are rejected.
Paper applications need four identical prints on photo-quality paper, reverse side white and unglazed; black and white is recommended, colour is accepted.

Thai e-passports are captured in person: staff take the photo and fingerprints, so there is nothing to crop for a passport. The 35 × 45 mm size applies to visa applications.
The MFA visa form takes one to three 3.5 × 4.5 cm prints depending on the visa type and post.
JPG or JPEG up to 3 MB; no pixel size is published, so this export uses 35 × 45 mm at 300 ppi. Do not crop the photo from your passport; shirtless or tank-top photos are rejected.

From the top of the head (not the hairline) to the bottom of the chin: 1 to 1⅜ in.
For paper applications in person or by mail, and for the DV or visa upload. Online renewals require your original uncropped photo; do not use this crop for online renewal.
Colour, on photo-quality paper; computer-generated prints are acceptable if sharp with no visible pixels.
DV entry: exactly 600 × 600 px JPEG, 240 KB or less, head 50–69% of the height from chin to top of head. DS-160 uploads take 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px (from search snippets of an unreachable page).

4 × 6 cm is also the Vietnamese ID (CCCD) size; many older consular pages still say 2 × 2 in for renewals abroad.
Counter applications take two 4 × 6 cm photos taken within the last 6 months (Circular 73/2021/TT-BCA).
A recent 4 × 6 cm portrait in JPG or JPEG under 2 MB; the system verifies it automatically. No pixel size is published, so this export uses 4 × 6 cm at 300 ppi.

Place the crown and chin at the guide lines and the eyes in the band when one is shown. The oval is an approximate placement guide, not a face measurement or approval check.
This authority publishes no head height: keep the face centred with space above the head and the shoulders visible.

Take a suitable original
Ask someone to take the photo at eye level, with the camera several feet away. Use even lighting and the background required by your country. Face forward, keep your eyes visible and leave space around your head and shoulders. Avoid filters and background replacement; every country page ends with a checklist of what its authority adds.
Align and check the photo
Choose the country, then zoom and move the photo against the head guide. The guide uses the published adult head range, plus the eye band and crown gap where the authority gives them, and switches to the upload frame when you prepare an online file. It does not detect your face or measure your actual head. Children can have different rules; read the official source for your situation.
Print, make a sheet or upload through the right route
Prints come out at the authority’s resolution as a JPG, as a PDF whose page is exactly the photo size, or as a 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) sheet with as many copies as fit and thin cut marks, ready for a photo kiosk. Print at actual size (100%), never fit-to-page. Upload files come out at the official pixel size with the JPEG quality searched into the official file-size range. Reference profiles explain the route instead; no export is a guarantee of acceptance.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a passport photo?
There is no single worldwide size. Many countries use 35 × 45 mm, the US uses 2 × 2 inches, Canada and Brazil use 50 × 70 mm, China 33 × 48 mm, Spain 26 × 32 mm and Turkey 50 × 60 mm. Online uploads add their own pixel and file-size rules.
Can I make a passport photo with this tool?
Where the authority accepts a self-prepared photo, yes: a print at the official size, a 4 × 6 in sheet with cut marks, or an upload file at the official pixel size and within its file-size limit. Where the authority needs a photographer, an uncropped original or a counter capture, the profile is a size reference and exports are off.
Which countries take the photo at the office?
Sweden, Indonesia, the Philippines and Argentina capture it at the appointment, as do Brazil, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand for most passport applicants. Those pages say what to wear and bring instead.
Does the head guide guarantee acceptance?
No. It shows the published head range, eye line and crown gap where an authority gives them. It does not measure your face, check lighting or assess eligibility. The issuing authority decides whether a photo is acceptable.
How does the file-size limit work?
The upload export searches the JPEG quality until the file sits inside the official range, for example 40–120 KB for China or 25 KB for a Malaysian ESD upload, and tells you the final size. It never resizes below the official pixel dimensions.
Are passport photos uploaded?
No. The preview and every export are created in your browser. Your original file stays on your device.
