Official requirements — Directorate General of Immigration & Passports
Place the crown and chin at the guide lines and the eyes in the band when one is shown. The oval is an approximate placement guide, not a face measurement or approval check.
This authority publishes no head height: keep the face centred with space above the head and the shoulders visible.
Pakistani passport photo dimensions
The portal’s dimension diagram sets 45 mm high by 35 mm wide with the head at least 29 mm and no more than 34 mm. Photos must be professionally taken, a close-up of the full head and shoulders, with clear contrast against the plain white background.
The e-Services upload
The digital file should not exceed 5 MB; the portal’s photograph verification tool accepts JPG and PNG up to 350 KB, which this export enforces. No pixel dimensions are published, so the file is 35 × 45 mm at 300 ppi, 413 × 531 px.
What is not accepted
Photos cut down from larger pictures, and pictures edited in software such as Photoshop. Red-eye, shadows, soft focus, sunglasses, tinted glasses, frames or hair over the eyes, and anything covering the face.
NADRA is a separate authority
NADRA, which issues the CNIC and NICOP, publishes its own online-application guideline: 45 × 35 mm professionally printed, plain white background, no more than 6 months old, face 70–80% of the photograph, file maximum 60 KB. Do not mix the two.
How to take a valid photo
The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.
- Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
- Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
- Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
- Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
- Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
- Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
- Eyes open, visible and free of glare; no sunglasses, tinted glasses, frames or hair over the eyes.
- Nothing covering the face.
- Facing forward, looking straight at the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed.
- Close-up of the full head and shoulders, only you in the photo, clear contrast with the background, no red-eye or shadows, sharp focus.
