The online renewal file

413 × 531 px is recommended; only 395–431 px wide and 507–550 px high are accepted, in JPG or JPEG of 500 KB or less, 300 dpi recommended. The head must still measure 3.2–3.6 cm when printed at 3.5 × 4.5 cm, so the same guide applies. Phone selfies and heavy retouching are discouraged and can be rejected at review.

Expression and eyes

Mouth closed with no teeth showing, no smile or raised eyebrows, eyes open naturally and looking straight, no red-eye. No light reflected on the glasses, and the frame must not cover the eyes; sunglasses, tinted lenses and circle lenses are not allowed.

What is rejected

Edited, filtered or AI-generated or composited photos. Hats, headbands and head coverings. Reflective jewellery and wireless earphones. The current rules are the October 2022 revision of the passport photo standard.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • No light reflected on glasses and the frame must not cover the eyes; sunglasses, tinted lenses and circle lenses are not allowed.
  • No hats, headbands or head coverings.
  • Mouth closed with no teeth showing, no smile or raised eyebrows, eyes open naturally, looking straight, no red-eye.
  • Edited, filtered or AI-generated photos are rejected; no reflective jewellery or wireless earphones.
