Place the crown and chin at the guide lines and the eyes in the band when one is shown. The oval is an approximate placement guide, not a face measurement or approval check.
This authority publishes no head height: keep the face centred with space above the head and the shoulders visible.
Why own photos are not accepted
Photography for passports and national ID cards takes place during the application at the police passport offices, under the Passport Act. The police give two reasons: the quality of the photo, and excluding someone using another person’s photo.
What happens at the visit
At the visit the passport officer takes a photograph and two fingerprints. There is no separate photo fee; the application fees are 500 SEK for a passport, 400 SEK for a national ID card and 980 SEK for a provisional passport.
Children
The rule applies to children too: no photo of the child is brought, and the child is photographed at the passport office.
Technical criteria
The technical criteria for the in-office image are in the Police regulation PMFS 2021:3, which was not read for this page. The FAQ page was last reviewed on 30 September 2026.
How to take a valid photo
