Official requirements — Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan
Place the crown and chin at the guide lines and the eyes in the band when one is shown. The oval is an approximate placement guide, not a face measurement or approval check.
This authority publishes no head height: keep the face centred with space above the head and the shoulders visible.
Japanese passport photo dimensions
The print is 35 × 45 mm. The head measures 34 ± 2 mm from crown to chin, so 32–36 mm; the leaflet diagram also sets the crown 4 ± 2 mm below the top edge and the face centre 17 ± 2 mm from each side, which the guide reproduces. The photo must be taken within 6 months before the application date.
Online applications on MyNaPortal and ORRnet
MyNaPortal accepts a jpg of 600 KB or less and compresses larger files; ORRnet, used from abroad, takes 20 KB to 2 MB in jpg, jpeg, bmp or png. No pixel size is published, so the export uses 35 × 45 mm at 300 ppi, and the app can also take the photo during the application.
The paper photo
One borderless print per application; write your name on the back without pressing through. A photo that does not meet the specification is replaced at the counter, so check the head height on the print.
What is rejected
Flash reflection on lenses, heavy or dark frames, frames covering the eyes, sunglasses and coloured contact lenses. Smiling, an open mouth, a tilted head or eyes away from the camera. Retouching that changes face shape or features, such as eye enlargement, skin whitening or outline correction. Hats are not allowed.
How to take a valid photo
The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.
- Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
- Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
- Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
- Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
- Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
- Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
- No flash reflection on lenses, no heavy or dark frames, no frames covering the eyes, no sunglasses, no coloured contact lenses.
- Hatless.
- Facing front; smiling, an open mouth, a tilted head or eyes away from the camera are rejected.
- No retouching that changes face shape or features: no eye enlargement, skin whitening or outline correction.
