AVIF to PNG converter

Drop AVIF images below and download them as PNG, transparency kept and no further quality lost. Your browser decodes AVIF itself, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up or limit.

How to convert AVIF to PNG

    1. Add your images. Drag AVIF files onto the box above, tap Choose files, or paste an image you copied from a web page.
    2. Wait a moment. Each image is decoded by your browser and written as a PNG; there is nothing to set.
    3. Download. Save each PNG with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.

Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.

    What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec, published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It compresses photos noticeably smaller than JPEG and WebP at the same quality, and it supports transparency, HDR and animation. Chrome, Firefox and Safari (since Safari 16, in 2022) all display it, so it increasingly turns up when you save an image from a website.

Most things outside a browser still do not open it: older image viewers, many photo editors, office programs, upload forms and printing services expect JPG or PNG.

    Why convert AVIF to PNG?

PNG opens everywhere and keeps two things AVIF has that JPG lacks: transparency and exact pixels. For a logo, an icon, a cut-out or a graphic saved from a website, PNG is the format every program, form and editor accepts. For a photo without transparency, AVIF to JPG gives a much smaller file.

What the PNG keeps, and what it leaves out

    • Kept: every pixel the browser decodes, the transparency, the full size.
    • Left out: animation, of which only the first frame is kept, and HDR, shown as on a standard screen.
    • Size: PNG files are much larger than AVIF, often many times larger for photos.

Your images stay on your device

Current browsers decode AVIF natively, so there is nothing to download: the files are read from your disk, redrawn as PNG in memory and saved to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. It is the same promise we make in our iPhone app, PrunePic: it reviews your photos on the iPhone itself and never uploads them.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the AVIF to PNG converter free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.

Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so the pixels decoded from the AVIF are stored exactly.

    Does the PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas of the AVIF stay transparent in the PNG.

    Which browsers can open AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later. An older browser shows a message instead of converting.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

AVIF compresses very efficiently and PNG never discards detail. Several times larger is normal; use AVIF to JPG for small photos.
