How to convert JPEG to PNG
- Add your photos. Drag JPG files onto the box above, or tap Choose files.
- Wait a moment. Each photo is decoded and written as a PNG; there is no quality setting, as PNG is lossless.
- Download. Save each PNG with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.
Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.
What is a JPG file?
JPEG (or JPG, the three-letter extension from the days of Windows) is the photo format that every camera, phone, website, printer and program has understood since the 1990s. It is lossy: it discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice to make files small, and the quality setting decides how much. It has no transparency.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
Because something asks for PNG: an upload form, a design tool, a template that wants one format, a developer who needs assets as PNG. And because PNG is lossless: once a photo is PNG, every later edit and save keeps the pixels exact, while saving a JPG again and again degrades it a little each time. Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail the JPG already discarded, but it stops the loss there.
What the PNG keeps, and what it leaves out
- Kept: every pixel of the decoded JPG, at the full size, the right way up.
- Left out: the camera details, date taken and location stored in the JPG. PNG has no transparency to gain here; the photo stays opaque.
- Size: the PNG will be much larger than the JPG, often five times or more, because photos do not compress well losslessly.

| Where | How | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Any browser | This page: drop the files, download the PNGs | One photo or a batch, on any device |
| Mac | Open the photo in Preview, then File › Export and choose PNG | Photos already on a Mac |
| Windows | Open the photo in Paint or Photos and save a copy as PNG | One photo at a time on a PC |
Your photos stay on your device
The conversion is done by your browser's own image code, with nothing to download: files are read from your disk, redrawn as PNG in memory and saved to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. It is the same promise we make in our iPhone app, PrunePic: it reviews your photos on the iPhone itself and never uploads them.

Frequently asked questions
Is the JPG to PNG converter free?
Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. Detail the JPG already discarded cannot come back. PNG stops any further loss, which is useful if you will edit the image.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, and photos have far more detail than lossless compression can squeeze. Five times larger is normal.
Does the PNG keep the photo's date and location?
No. The PNG contains the picture only; EXIF data such as the date taken, camera and location are left out.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
Yes. Drop as many as you like; Download all saves every PNG in one zip.
