Finland passport photo size

A Finnish passport photo is 36 × 47 mm, a size specific to Finland, or exactly 500 × 653 px as a JPEG of at most 250 KB with the crown-to-chin height at 445–500 px. The online application takes the digital photo through a studio retrieval code.

Measured from the top of the head without hair to the chin.

Either a digital photo delivered through a studio retrieval code or a paper print is accepted. 36 × 47 mm is a Finnish size, not the ICAO 35 × 45 mm.

A paper print is accepted at the counter; the online application needs the digital photo through the retrieval code.

Exactly 500 × 653 px; a deviation of even one pixel is rejected. Crown to chin 445–500 px. Photo studios send the file to the police photo server and hand you a retrieval code for the online application; non-professional photos are often rejected.

Finnish passport photo dimensions

The print is 36 mm wide and 47 mm high, not the ICAO 35 × 45 mm. The head measures 32–36 mm from the top of the head without hair to the chin, and the photo must be no more than 6 months old on a neutral, light background.

The 500 × 653 pixel file

The police instructions ask for exactly 500 × 653 px, the same ratio as 36 × 47 mm; a deviation of even one pixel is rejected. The JPEG (not JPEG 2000) stays under 250 KB and the crown-to-chin height is 445–500 px.

How the digital route works

Photo studios send the image to the police photo server and give you a retrieval code to enter in the online passport application; you cannot upload the file yourself. The police note that non-professional photos are often rejected. A paper print is accepted at the counter.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed.
  • Head height counts from the top of the head without hair to the chin.
  • Glasses and head-covering rules exist in the police guideline, which blocked automated reading; check it before you shoot.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Finnish passport photo?

36 × 47 mm printed, or exactly 500 × 653 px for the digital file.

Can I upload my own photo to the Finnish passport application?

No. The online application takes a retrieval code from a photo studio that sent the image to the police photo server.

Why does the tool offer a 500 × 653 px JPEG then?

It is the specification studios work to, and the 36 × 47 mm print is accepted at the counter. The police decide what they accept.

How is the head measured?

From the top of the head without hair to the bottom of the chin: 32–36 mm, or 445–500 px in the digital file.
