Who brings a Brazilian passport photo

In Brazil the facial photo is captured at the booth together with the fingerprints, so adults bring nothing. Applicants under 5 bring a current 5 × 7 cm photo with a white background, and the child still attends.

Consulate photos use the same 5 × 7 cm

Consulates frame the face and shoulders in front view on a 5 × 7 cm print, with no reflections or shadows, not cut down from a larger photo and not already used in a previous passport. Babies may be photographed at home on a white sheet.

Head size is measured differently

Consulate pages measure the face from chin to forehead rather than to the crown: 31–36 mm in São José, or 4–4.5 cm with at least 1 cm above the head in Tokyo. The preview therefore shows no crown line; keep the face centred with space above it.

Glasses, headwear and clothing

Some consulates reject dark glasses, thick frames and reflecting lenses; others ask for no glasses at all. No headwear except for religious reasons, a neutral expression with eyes open, and avoid white or very light clothing against the white background.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • No headwear except for religious reasons, with the face fully visible.
  • Neutral expression, eyes open and visible, looking straight at the camera; newborns may have their eyes closed.
  • Consulates reject dark glasses, thick or showy frames and reflecting lenses; some ask for no glasses at all.
  • Avoid white or very light clothing; babies may be photographed at home on a white sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Brazilian passport photo?

5 × 7 cm on a white background, for applicants under 5 and for consular applications. Adults are photographed at the Federal Police booth.

Do adults need a photo for a Brazilian passport?

No. The Polícia Federal captures the photo during the appointment.

Can I reuse a photo from my previous passport?

No. Consulates refuse a photo already used in a previous passport and one that no longer identifies the child.

Can I wear glasses?

The Federal Police publishes no rule because it captures the photo. Consulates vary: no dark or showy frames, and some ask for no glasses.
