WebP to PNG converter

Drop WebP images below and download them as PNG, transparency included, with no quality loss. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up or limit.

How to convert WebP to PNG

    1. Add your images. Drag WebP files onto the box above, tap Choose files, or paste an image you copied from a web page.
    2. Wait a moment. Each image is decoded by your browser and written as a PNG; there is nothing to set.
    3. Download. Save each PNG with the button next to it, or tap Download all for a zip.

Files in another format are listed with a short reason and a link to the right converter, and the rest of the batch carries on.

    What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 for the web. It compresses photos about a quarter to a third smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and unlike JPEG it can also hold transparency and animation, and compress losslessly like PNG. Every current browser displays it, which is why so many websites now serve WebP, and why the picture you just saved from a website is a .webp file.

The trouble starts away from the browser: an older photo editor, an upload form that only accepts JPG and PNG, an office document, a printing service or a photo frame may not take it. That is when you need to convert it.

    Why convert WebP to PNG?

PNG is the safe choice when the image has transparency or sharp edges: a logo saved from a website, an icon, a product cut-out, a chart. PNG keeps the transparent background that JPG would turn white, and it stores every pixel exactly, so a lossless WebP comes out identical and a lossy WebP is not degraded any further. If the image is a photo without transparency and you want a small file, WebP to JPG is the better fit.

What the PNG keeps, and what it leaves out

    • Kept: every pixel, the transparency, the full size.
    • Left out: animation. An animated WebP gives a PNG of its first frame.
    • Size: PNG files are larger than WebP, often several times larger for photos. That is the price of a lossless format every program opens.

Your images stay on your device

Your browser decodes WebP natively, so there is nothing to download: the files are read from your disk, redrawn as PNG in memory and saved to your downloads folder. No server ever receives your files, and nothing is kept once you close the page. It is the same promise we make in our iPhone app, PrunePic: it reviews your photos on the iPhone itself and never uploads them.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the WebP to PNG converter free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. It runs in your browser.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so the pixels your browser decodes from the WebP are stored exactly. A lossy WebP keeps whatever quality it had; a lossless WebP comes out identical.

    Does the PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent in the PNG.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

The converter saves the first frame as a PNG; PNG cannot hold the animation.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses far more efficiently, and PNG never discards detail. A few times larger is normal; for photos without transparency, WebP to JPG gives much smaller files.
