Official requirements — Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE)

The photo is captured at the appointment

The Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores captures the photo during the passport appointment, in Mexico and at consulates, as part of the biometrics. Consulate pages state that no photograph is required.

When prints are requested

The SRE domestic requirements page, last updated in 2017, says that exceptionally two colour passport-size photos may be requested: front view, white background, no glasses, head totally uncovered, taken within the previous 30 days. The 4.5 × 3.5 cm value comes from a 2010 SRE liaison-office sheet, so this entry is marked partial.

Minors and identification

A parent must authorize the photo of a minor. Children under 7 may use a medical certificate with a sealed photo as identification.

Preparing for the capture

Consulates advise moderate make-up, hair pulled back, and no coloured contact lenses or accessories hiding the features. The preview shows a 35 × 45 mm frame for reference only; exports are disabled.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Taken without glasses.
  • Head totally uncovered, facing front, nothing covering the face.
  • Consulates advise moderate make-up, hair pulled back, and no coloured contact lenses or accessories hiding the features.
  • Minors: a parent must authorize the photo.
