Official requirements — Service Public

French passport and identity card dimensions

The required photo is 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. The face measurement runs from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull, excluding hair, and must be 32–36 mm, 70–80% of the photo. The photo must be less than 6 months old.

Use the required background and pose

The background must be plain and light-coloured, such as light blue or grey; white is not allowed. Keep your head straight and uncovered, eyes visible and mouth closed, with no hat, scarf or headband. Glasses are optional with thin frames and untinted lenses.

An approved capture service is required

For a French passport or identity card, the single photo must be taken by a licensed professional or an approved booth; a non-compliant photo means the document is not issued. The ANTS e-photo code applies to driving-licence procedures, not to passport or CNI applications.

How to take a valid photo

The shared ICAO points first, then what this authority adds.

  • Have someone else take the photo at eye level from a few steps away; most authorities reject selfies.
  • Face the camera straight on with your head level, both eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
  • Light the face evenly: no shadows on the face or the background, no flash reflections, no red-eye.
  • Keep the photo as taken: no filters, retouching, background replacement or AI edits.
  • Only you in the frame, nothing covering the face, hair away from the eyes, no uniform.
  • Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can follow the guide.
  • Glasses are optional; the frame must not be thick or hide the eyes, lenses not tinted, no reflections.
  • Head uncovered: no hat, scarf or headband.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, looking at the lens, eyes open and fully visible, ears uncovered.
  • Colour strongly recommended; sharp, no folds, no over- or under-exposure, no shadows on the face or background.
