How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone

Open Photos, tap Collections, then Utilities, then Duplicates, and tap Merge on each set. Photos keeps the best version and moves the extra copies to Recently Deleted. That handles exact copies and lower-resolution versions of the same image, but not the five almost identical shots you took of the same moment.

Delete duplicate photos with the Photos app10 minutes

  1. Open the Duplicates collectionOpen Photos, tap Collections, tap Utilities, then tap Duplicates. If you see no Duplicates collection, Photos has not found any.
  2. Check each setEach row is one set of duplicates. Tap a thumbnail to look closer if you are not sure the copies are identical.
  3. MergeTap Merge next to a set, then tap Merge [number] Items. Photos keeps one version and moves the others to Recently Deleted.
  4. Free the spaceOpen Recently Deleted below Utilities, unlock it, tap Select, choose the merged copies and delete them to get the space back now.

iPhones have had a built-in duplicate finder since iOS 16, and in iOS 26 it lives in the Collections tab. It is the right first step, and it is free. This guide shows how to use it, what it catches, and how to deal with the similar shots it leaves behind.

Merge duplicates with the Photos app

  1. Open Photos and tap Collections.
  2. Tap Utilities, then Duplicates. The collection only appears when Photos has found duplicates, so if it is missing you either have none or your library is still being analyzed.
  3. Each row is one set. Look at the thumbnails, and tap one to view it larger if you are unsure.
  4. Tap Merge next to a set, then confirm with Merge [number] Items.

Photos keeps the highest-quality version, carries over relevant information such as captions and favorites, and moves the other copies to Recently Deleted. If a set contains copies that are not exactly identical, Photos may offer to merge only the exact copies, which is the safer choice when you are unsure.

The space does not come back until the copies leave Recently Deleted, either after 30 days or when you delete them yourself: tap Collections, open Recently Deleted below Utilities, unlock it, tap Select, choose the items and delete them.

What counts as a duplicate. Apple’s detection matches exact copies, even with different metadata, and photos that look the same but differ in resolution, file format or other small ways. That covers a photo you saved twice, a lower-resolution copy sent back to you in a chat, and an image imported once from your camera and once from a computer.

What the Duplicates collection misses

The duplicates that take the most space are usually not duplicates in Apple’s sense. They are similar shots:

  • eight attempts at the same group photo, because someone blinked
  • a sunset taken every few seconds as the light changed
  • the same plate of food from three angles
  • a run of photos taken by tapping the shutter quickly, which are saved as separate photos rather than a burst

Each one is a different image, so Photos keeps them all. Bursts are a separate case that Photos groups on its own; see how to delete burst photos.

Finding similar shots in the Photos app means scrolling the grid and comparing tiny thumbnails. Differences in focus, eyes or framing are invisible at that size, which is why most people keep all eight.

The methods compared

Method Finds exact copies Finds similar shots How you decide Cost
Photos > Utilities > Duplicates Yes No Merge per set, Photos picks the version Free
Photos library, Select mode Manually Manually Grid of thumbnails Free
Duplicate finder apps Yes Usually, by grouping Varies by app Free tier or subscription, varies
PrunePic No dedicated finder You see them side by side in date order One photo at a time, full screen Free download

Clearing similar shots with PrunePic

PrunePic does not have a duplicate finder. Use the Photos Duplicates collection for exact copies first. Where PrunePic helps is the next step: deciding which of your similar shots to keep.

In the Everything cleaning mode, PrunePic shows your library in date order, newest or oldest first, so a run of similar shots arrives one after another, each full screen. Pinch or double-tap to zoom and check focus and faces, then:

  • swipe right on the best one to add it to Favorites
  • swipe left on the rest to send them to the trash
  • swipe up on any you want to keep as well

Nothing is deleted on a swipe. Everything waits in the PrunePic Trash, where you can put a photo back before you empty it. Changed your mind mid-run? Tap Undo.

Two cleaning modes make similar shots easier to find:

  • On This Day shows what you took on today’s date in past years. Old photos from the same day are often full of near-repeats.
  • Trips & Moments groups photos by place, so you can clean up a holiday while you still remember which shot was the good one.

PrunePic works through Apple’s Photos framework, on your iPhone; your photos never leave your device.

Common mistakes

  • Merging everything without looking. Photos picks the version it considers best. For important photos, open the set and check, or merge exact copies only.
  • Forgetting Recently Deleted. Merged copies still use space for up to 30 days.
  • Expecting iCloud to keep a copy. With iCloud Photos on, merges sync to all your devices. If you are cleaning up to save iCloud space, see iCloud storage full.
  • Hunting duplicates before videos. Duplicate photos are a few megabytes each. If you need space quickly, find your large videos first.

The bottom line

Start with Photos > Collections > Utilities > Duplicates and merge the sets, then empty Recently Deleted. For the similar shots it leaves behind, go through your library in date order and keep the best of each run. For the bigger picture of where your space goes, see how to free up storage on iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging duplicates delete photos for good?

No. The extra copies go to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days. You can recover them from there during that time, or delete them permanently to free the space immediately.

Which copy does iPhone keep when I merge?

Photos keeps the highest-quality version and combines relevant information from the others, such as captions and favorites, into the copy it keeps. The remaining copies go to Recently Deleted.

Why don't I see a Duplicates album on my iPhone?

The Duplicates collection only appears when Photos finds duplicates in your library. After importing or syncing a large library, give your iPhone time to finish analyzing it, ideally overnight while it charges.

Does the Duplicates album find similar photos?

Not really. It finds exact copies and versions of the same image with a different resolution, format or small edits. A series of shots of the same scene, taken seconds apart, is not treated as duplicates.

Will merging duplicates on my iPhone affect my other devices?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. Merges and deletions sync to every device signed in to the same Apple Account.
