How many photos can a 128GB iPhone hold?

Roughly 25,000 to 33,000 photos at the default 24 MP setting, assuming about 100 GB is left for photos after iOS and your apps. Live Photos, which are on by default, can cut that to around 15,000, 48 MP ProRAW shots to about 1,300, and every hour of 4K video takes about 10 GB of the same space.

Work out how many photos your own iPhone can hold5 minutes

  1. Check your spaceOpen Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. Note how much space Photos uses and how much is still available.
  2. Count your libraryFind how many photos and videos you have: scroll to the very bottom of your library in Photos, or use the library snapshot in an app such as PrunePic.
  3. Find your average sizeDivide the space Photos uses by the number of items. This only works if Optimize iPhone Storage is off, because optimized photos are stored at a smaller size.
  4. Estimate what is leftDivide your available space by your average size to see roughly how many more photos fit.

The honest answer depends on three things: how much of the 128 GB is really free, what resolution and format your photos use, and how much video you shoot. Below is the maths with the sizes Apple publishes, then a two-minute way to work it out for your own iPhone. Figures are estimates for iPhones running iOS 26; your own photos will vary with the scene and your camera settings.

How much of 128 GB is free for photos

You never get the full 128 GB. Apple’s spec pages say a standard configuration uses roughly 12 GB to 24 GB, which includes iOS, Apple apps you can delete (about 4.5 GB), and about 7 GB for Apple Intelligence on-device models when Apple Intelligence is turned on.

Then come your own apps, messages, music and downloads. Most people have 10 to 30 GB of those. So the tables below assume 100 GB for photos and videos. Scale up or down from there: every 10 GB is a tenth of each number.

How many photos fit in 100 GB

Photo size depends mostly on resolution and format. iPhone 15 and later save 24 MP photos by default; older models save 12 MP. Apple says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files, and puts a ProRAW photo at about 25 MB at 12 MP and about 75 MB at 48 MP.

Photo type Typical size Photos in 100 GB
12 MP HEIF (older iPhones, or 12 MP setting) about 2 to 2.5 MB 40,000 to 50,000
24 MP HEIF (default on iPhone 15 and later) about 3 to 4 MB 25,000 to 33,000
24 MP Live Photo often close to double a still roughly 12,000 to 17,000
48 MP HEIF Max (with Resolution Control on) about 6 to 8 MB 12,500 to 16,500
12 MP ProRAW about 25 MB about 4,000
48 MP ProRAW about 75 MB about 1,300

Choosing Most Compatible in Settings > Camera > Formats saves JPEG instead of HEIF, which takes roughly twice the space for the same photo.

Live Photos change the answer the most. They are on by default, and each one stores a short video clip of about three seconds alongside the photo. If most of your library is Live Photos, expect closer to 15,000 photos than 30,000.

How much video fits in 100 GB

Your iPhone lists the size of a minute of video for each recording setting in Settings > Camera > Record Video. With the default High Efficiency format:

Recording setting About one minute Video in 100 GB
1080p HD at 30 fps 60 MB about 27 hours
4K at 30 fps 170 MB about 10 hours
4K at 60 fps 400 MB about 4 hours

Video and photos share the same space. Ten hours of 4K at 30 fps uses the room of roughly 30,000 standard photos. That is why a 128 GB iPhone with a modest photo count can still be full: a few long clips do it. See how to find large videos on iPhone.

Work it out for your own iPhone

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and note how much space Photos uses and how much is still available.
  2. Find how many items you have. Scroll to the very bottom of your library in Photos, or open the library snapshot in PrunePic’s cleanup insights, which counts your photos, videos, Live Photos, screenshots, bursts and other media types.
  3. Divide the Photos figure by the number of items to get your average size, then divide your available space by that average.

One catch: if Optimize iPhone Storage is on in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, your iPhone keeps smaller versions of many photos and the originals live in iCloud. Your average will look small, and your iPhone can hold a library much bigger than 128 GB, as long as your iCloud plan has room for it.

How to fit more on a 128GB iPhone

  • Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage if you use iCloud Photos and your plan can hold your library.
  • Delete the big things first. Videos usually free more space than anything else. PrunePic’s Videos mode shows clips longest first, with the file size on each card.
  • Clear what you never meant to keep. Screenshots, bursts and runs of near-identical shots add up. See how to delete burst photos and how to delete duplicate photos.
  • Pick your settings on purpose. Turn Live Photos off for shots that do not need them, use 24 MP rather than 48 MP unless you crop a lot, and record 4K at 30 fps rather than 60 fps when motion is not the point.

Where PrunePic helps

Knowing your iPhone holds 30,000 photos does not make deciding which 5,000 to delete any easier. PrunePic shows your library one photo or video at a time; swipe left to delete, up to keep, right to favorite. It remembers what you reviewed, so a few minutes a day gets through a large library. Everything you delete waits in the PrunePic Trash until you empty it, and cleanup insights record how much space you got back.

Your photos never leave your device.

The bottom line

A 128 GB iPhone holds about 25,000 to 33,000 standard 24 MP photos if 100 GB is free for them, but Live Photos, 48 MP shots and 4K video bring that down fast. Check your own numbers in iPhone Storage. If you are close to full, start with how to free up storage on iPhone, or iPhone storage full if you are already there.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a 128GB iPhone can I actually use?

Less than 128 GB. Apple says a standard configuration uses roughly 12 GB to 24 GB, including iOS, Apple apps you can delete and, when Apple Intelligence is on, about 7 GB of on-device models. Your own apps, messages and downloads come out of what is left.

Is 128GB enough for photos?

For a few thousand photos a year and occasional 1080p video, yes, especially with iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage. If you shoot a lot of 4K video, Live Photos or ProRAW, or keep years of photos on the phone, 128 GB fills up quickly.

How many hours of video can a 128GB iPhone record?

With about 100 GB free, roughly 27 hours of 1080p at 30 fps, about 10 hours of 4K at 30 fps, or about 4 hours of 4K at 60 fps, based on the per-minute sizes iPhone lists in Settings > Camera > Record Video.

Do Live Photos take up more space?

Yes. A Live Photo stores the photo plus a short video clip of about three seconds, so it takes noticeably more space than a still, often close to twice as much. You can turn Live Photos off in the Camera app before you take a photo.
