iPhone storage full: what to do right now
Your iPhone is full when Settings > General > iPhone Storage shows almost no space left. For quick relief, delete a few long videos and then empty Recently Deleted in Photos, because deleted items keep using space there for 30 days. Then clear Messages attachments and offload apps you do not use.
Get space back when iPhone storage is full10 minutes
- See what is taking the spaceOpen Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage, and wait for the bar at the top to finish loading.
- Delete a few long videosIn Photos, tap Collections, open Videos under Media Types, and delete long clips you do not need.
- Empty Recently Deleted in PhotosTap Collections, open Recently Deleted below Utilities, unlock it, tap Select, choose the items and delete them.
- Empty Recently Deleted in MessagesIn Messages, open the menu at the top of the conversation list, tap Recently Deleted, select the conversations and tap Delete.
- Offload unused appsGo to Settings, tap Apps, tap App Store, and turn on Offload Unused Apps.
When the Storage Almost Full message appears, you usually need space now: the camera will not save, an update will not install, an app will not download. This page is the short version. Steps are written for iOS 26. For the complete list of everything worth clearing, see our guide on how to free up storage on iPhone.
Get space back in the next 10 minutes
- Open the storage screen. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and wait for the bar to load. Note the top two or three items.
- Delete five long videos. In Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Media Types and open Videos. A minute of 4K video at 30 fps takes about 170 MB according to Apple’s camera settings, so a handful of long clips can free several gigabytes.
- Empty Recently Deleted in Photos. Tap Collections, open Recently Deleted below Utilities, tap View Album and unlock, then tap Select, choose what to remove and delete it. Without this step, the videos you just deleted keep taking space for 30 days.
- Turn on Offload Unused Apps. In Settings > Apps > App Store. iPhone removes unused apps when space is low but keeps their documents and data.
- Check the result. Go back to iPhone Storage. If you still need more, keep reading.
Why your storage is still full after deleting photos
This is the most common complaint, and there are four usual reasons.
Recently Deleted. Photos keeps deleted items for 30 days. So does Messages: deleted messages and attachments wait in its own Recently Deleted folder. In Messages, open the menu at the top of the conversation list, tap Recently Deleted, select conversations and tap Delete. Files has a Recently Deleted location too.
Messages attachments. Group chats full of videos can be bigger than your camera roll. Open a busy conversation, tap the name at the top, tap Photos, then Edit and Select Photos to delete attachments in bulk.
The screen needs time. The iPhone Storage figures are calculated, not live. After a big cleanup, give it a few minutes, or restart your iPhone, before deciding nothing changed.
System Data. iOS lists caches, logs and temporary files as System Data. You cannot delete it directly, and iOS clears cached files on its own when it needs room. It can look alarming, but photos, videos and Messages are almost always where the recoverable space is.
Stop it filling up again
A full iPhone tends to come back within weeks unless something changes. Pick the habits that fit you:
- Let iCloud hold the originals. In Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Your iPhone keeps smaller versions and downloads originals when you open them. It needs an iCloud plan big enough for your whole library; if that is the problem, read iCloud storage full.
- Set Messages to expire. Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages can remove conversations older than 30 days or a year. Save any photos you want first, because whole conversations go.
- Record video at the size you need. 4K at 60 fps takes far more space per minute than 1080p. Check Settings > Camera > Record Video; the screen shows roughly how much space a minute takes at each setting.
- Clean a little, often. Ten minutes a week stops screenshots and duplicate shots from piling up.

What the built-in tools do not help with
Settings tells you that Photos is big. It does not tell you which photos to delete, and the Photos app makes that slow:
- It cannot sort videos by file size, so the biggest clips are mixed in with ten-second ones. Our guide to finding large videos covers the workarounds.
- Select mode works on a grid of thumbnails and forgets your place when you leave.
- There is no review step: once you confirm, items go straight to Recently Deleted, with no list of everything you chose this session.
Clearing the photo library with PrunePic
PrunePic is built for the part Settings cannot do. It shows one photo or video at a time, full screen: swipe left to delete, up to keep, right to favorite. It remembers what you reviewed, so short sessions add up.
- Find the heavy items. Videos mode shows only clips and screen recordings, sorted longest first if you like, and each card can show its file size in the corner.
- Check before anything is deleted. Swiped items collect in the PrunePic Trash, which shows how many items are waiting and how much space they take. Put anything back, then empty it in one go. iOS asks you to confirm and moves the items to Recently Deleted.
- See where your library stands. Cleanup insights show a breakdown of your library by media type, such as videos, screenshots, Live Photos and bursts, so you know which category to tackle next.
Your photos never leave your device.
Common mistakes
- Deleting photos you wanted, thinking iCloud has them. With iCloud Photos on, a deletion on your iPhone is a deletion everywhere. To keep copies in iCloud, read how to delete photos from iPhone but not iCloud first.
- Deleting apps instead of offloading them. Deleting removes the app’s data too. Offloading keeps it.
- Installing a “cleaner” for System Data. No App Store app can clear iOS’s own caches. Apps can only work on what Apple lets them see, such as your photo library.
The bottom line
Delete a few long videos, empty Recently Deleted in Photos and Messages, and turn on Offload Unused Apps. That clears space for most people in ten minutes. To keep it clear, let iCloud hold your originals if your plan allows it, and give your camera roll a few minutes each week.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when iPhone storage is full?
You cannot save new photos or videos, apps cannot download new content, and iOS updates will not install until you free space. Apps that need to write data can also slow down or stop working properly.
Why does my iPhone say storage is full when I have iCloud?
iCloud Photos syncs your library, it does not move it off your phone unless Optimize iPhone Storage is turned on. Check Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. Optimize keeps smaller versions on your iPhone and the originals in iCloud, as long as your iCloud plan has room.
I deleted photos but my storage did not change. Why?
They are still in Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days. Delete them from there. The iPhone Storage screen can also take a moment to recalculate, so check again after a few minutes or a restart.
Should I buy a bigger iPhone or more iCloud storage?
Clean up first: most full iPhones are full of videos, duplicates and screenshots nobody needs. If you still run out, iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage is cheaper than a new phone, provided your iCloud plan can hold your library.
